Route & regulations

The solar-powered boats must complete the gruelling course traditionally followed by the Eleven Cities Race over a period of six arduous days. The race will start in the forst week of July 2010 in Leeuwarden, the capital of the province of Friesland. The 220-kilometre route passes the towns of Sneek, Stavoren, Bolsward, Franeker, Dokkum and back to Leeuwarden.

Navigating these waters also demands a substantial level of expertise: crossing over the illustrious Slotermeer during the 2006 and 2008 events proved to be nothing less than a heroic feat. Later in the week, the participants will be expected to carry their boats across dry sections from waterway to waterway. During the leg between Franeker and Dokkum, the participants will also be required to lift their boats out of the water; which demands a perfect combination of sheer muscle power and technical insight.
